Alexander Graham Bell offered his telephone patent to Western Union — the telegraph monopoly, the most powerful communications company on Earth — for $100,000. An internal committee's legendary assessment: 'This telephone has too many shortcomings to be seriously considered as a means of communication. The device is inherently of no value to us.' Within two years, Western Union was desperately (and unsuccessfully) fighting Bell in court. Bell Telephone became AT&T — for a century, the most valuable company alive.
