Why Did Reliance Communications Fail?

Anil Ambani's ₹45,000 Crore Phone Empire — Gone in a Decade

💸 ₹45,000+ crore debt → bankruptcy; stock from ₹1,000+ to under ₹1THE BURN

📜 What Happened

In 2005, the Ambani brothers split Reliance — Anil got telecom (Reliance Communications), and it was a crown jewel: India's #2 telco with 100+ million subscribers. But while his brother Mukesh built Jio from scratch, Anil's RCom borrowed aggressively to buy spectrum and expand, loading up debt while the industry was about to be disrupted. Then came 2016: Jio launched with free calls and data, and the entire industry's economics collapsed. RCom — drowning in debt, unable to compete — saw its subscriber base evaporate, its stock crash from ₹1,000+ to under ₹1, and finally filed for bankruptcy in 2019. An empire that was once worth billions was auctioned for scraps, and Anil Ambani went from the world's 6th richest man to a man selling his private jet to pay debts.

☠️ The Fatal Mistake

Borrowing massive debt to compete in a commodity business just before a technological disruption (Jio) rewrote the economics — RCom had no cash cushion and no differentiation when the price war began.

🧠 The Lesson (Free for You)

In a commodity industry, debt is a suicide pact: the moment a competitor with deeper pockets starts a price war, the leveraged player dies first. Always keep a war chest — because the disruption you fear most is the one your competitor is already building.
