Why Did RadioShack Fail?

100 Years of 'The Electronics Store' — Diluted to Death

2015YEAR
☠️ BUSINESSCAUSE
💸 From 7,000 stores and $4B revenue to bankruptcy twiceTHE BURN

📜 What Happened

RadioShack was the neighborhood electronics authority for a century — the store where you bought your first soldering iron, your batteries, your CB radio. Then it tried to be everything: phones, kiosks inside other stores, own-brand gadgets, services, random accessories — a brand extension free-for-all that erased what it WAS in the customer's mind. By the time it realized, Amazon owned 'electronics' and Best Buy owned 'stores,' and RadioShack owned nothing. Bankruptcy in 2015; a zombie second bankruptcy by 2017; nearly all stores shuttered.

☠️ The Fatal Mistake

Diluting a clear position ('the electronics store') into a cluttered everything-store — the mind couldn't remember what RadioShack stood for, so it stopped choosing it.

🧠 The Lesson (Free for You)
