Why Did PaisaBazaar Fail?
India's Biggest Loan Marketplace, Written Down 95%
📜 What Happened
PaisaBazaar was India's largest online lending marketplace — 'the Loan Marketplace' that promised to compare credit cards, personal loans and insurance across every bank. Parent company PolicyBazaar rode it to a $3 billion valuation at its 2021 peak. But PaisaBazaar's economics never worked: it earned thin commissions while spending heavily on ads and discounts to acquire customers, and a flood of fintech rivals (cred, Groww, Jupiter, banks' own apps) ate the same customers with cheaper distribution. After years of mounting losses and failed attempts to turn profitable, parent PB Fintech wrote down PaisaBazaar's value by over 95% in 2024, effectively shutting its lending ambitions and gutting its team.
☠️ The Fatal Mistake
Building a middleman business in a market where distribution costs kept rising while the margin per transaction kept falling — no proprietary data, no captive customers.
🧠 The Lesson (Free for You)
A marketplace between two parties is only worth something if it is hard to bypass. If the banks and the customers can find each other cheaper elsewhere, your margin is your terminal illness.
