Why Did Napster Fail?
80 Million Users, Zero Business Model, Sued to Death
📜 What Happened
Napster hit 80 million users faster than any product in history — teenagers Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker had built the future of music distribution. But every download was copyright infringement; instead of converting to a licensed model early (labels initially would have talked), Napster fought Metallica, Dr. Dre, and the RIAA in court while its users' behavior remained illegal. Shut down by injunction in 2001. Two years later Apple launched iTunes and monetized the exact demand Napster proved.
