Why Did Koo Fail?

India's Twitter Died Waiting for Twitter to Die

📜 What Happened

Koo — the yellow bird — was India's answer to Twitter: government ministers onboarded during a 2021 standoff with Twitter, 60M+ downloads, Tiger Global money at a $270M valuation. But its growth spiked only when Twitter had political trouble; between controversies, users drifted back — celebrities, cricketers and news lived where the audience already was. Multi-language features were genuinely good; the network effect never came. When funding winter hit and a sale to Dailyhunt collapsed, Koo shut down in July 2024 with a farewell note: 'the little yellow bird says goodbye.'

☠️ The Fatal Mistake

Building a substitute, not an alternative — Koo's only growth engine was Twitter's bad weeks, and weather is not a strategy.
