King Gustavus Adolphus demanded his great warship carry a second gun deck — mid-construction, against the shipwright's design. Nobody dared refuse the king at war. The stability test (30 men running side to side) was stopped after three runs because the ship rolled alarmingly — and NOBODY TOLD THE KING. The Vasa sailed 1,300 meters on her maiden voyage, caught one gust, heeled, flooded through the open gun ports, and sank in full view of the celebrating crowd. She lay in the harbor mud for 333 years.
