Swissair was so financially solid it was called 'the Flying Bank' — a symbol of Swiss reliability. Consultants sold it the 'Hunter Strategy': buy stakes in half of Europe's weakest airlines (Sabena, LOT, LTU, Air Littoral...) to build an alliance by acquisition. Each stake bled cash; each rescue demanded more. In October 2001, out of cash, the fleet was grounded overnight — planes full of passengers, stranded worldwide. Switzerland treated it as a national humiliation; executives faced (unsuccessful) criminal trials.
