Why Did The Sugar Industry Fail?

The Sponsors Who Wrote the Nutrition Science

📜 What Happened

In 1967, the New England Journal of Medicine published a review by Harvard's Dr. Fred Hegsted — arguing that saturated fat, not sugar, was the main driver of coronary heart disease. In 2016, researchers at UCSF (Kearns et al.) revealed in JAMA Internal Medicine what was hidden in the archives: the review had been commissioned and paid for by the Sugar Research Foundation, which had also approved the manuscript's framing — the fat got the blame, the sugar got the cover. Similar sugar-funded 'calories are calories' papers kept circulating for decades. The result: a generation of dietary guidelines built on sponsored conclusions, and a metabolic crisis that is still compounding.

☠️ The Fatal Mistake

Buying the conclusion instead of the research — sponsorship designed to steer an entire field's direction, with the industry's name hidden from the reader.

🧠 The Lesson (Free for You)

Trace the funding before you trust the science. Sugar's lesson: when the industry pays for the 'independent' review, the independence is the product being sold — and the bill arrives decades later, in the bodies of consumers. In your own decisions, the primary question about any expert claim is never 'is this cited?' but 'who paid?'
