Sita, after surviving abduction, war and the fire itself, returned to Ayodhya as its queen — beloved by her husband Rama, her people, and her own conscience. Then a washerman's public remark about his own wife made Rama fear that his people doubted Sita's purity. He made the choice that haunts the epic: to protect his reputation as a king, he exiled his pregnant wife to the forest. Sita, who had chosen him over her kingdom, who had walked through fire for him, was abandoned — not for a crime, but for the fear of what people might say. She raised their sons alone in the hermitage and, in the later telling, refused to return, calling the earth itself to take her back. The king who could defeat an empire could not face a rumour.
