Dick and Mac McDonald invented the fast-food system; Ray Kroc franchised it, then bought them out for $2.7M. In the negotiation, the brothers asked for 0.5% of gross revenues in perpetuity — Kroc agreed, but asked to keep it out of the written contract (a handshake deal, for 'tax reasons'). The royalty was never paid. Today it would be worth well over $100 million a YEAR. Kroc even kept their name — and opened a McDonald's across from their original restaurant to bury it.
