📜 What Happened
In 1958 China declared war on four pests — rats, flies, mosquitoes, and sparrows, accused of eating grain. Hundreds of millions of people banged pots so sparrows couldn't land until they fell dead from exhaustion; nests were destroyed nationwide. Sparrows, it turned out, mostly ate INSECTS. With their predator erased, locust populations exploded and devoured the harvests, deepening (alongside disastrous farm policies) the Great Famine. In 1960 sparrows were quietly removed from the list — replaced by bed bugs.
