📜 What Happened
Genghis Khan sent the wealthy Khwarezmian Empire a trade caravan and offer of peace — he wanted commerce, not war, having just conquered China. A governor seized the caravan and killed the merchants. Genghis sent three ambassadors requesting justice; the Shah beheaded one and burned the others' beards. The Mongol response erased the empire: cities that resisted were annihilated, rivers rerouted over capitals. Millions died. The Shah fled and died on a Caspian island.
