Why Did 99 Cents Only Stores Fail?
The Dollar Store Killed by Inflation
📜 What Happened
For 42 years, 99 Cents Only Stores built a beloved, simple promise: everything for 99 cents. Then inflation arrived — and broke the promise. When costs rose, the company couldn't raise prices without betraying its own name, and it couldn't keep selling everything at 99 cents without bleeding. Management tried every lever: shrinkflation, private labels, a new format — but the anchor held the brand hostage. In April 2024, the chain announced it was closing all 377 stores and liquidating everything. The price was the brand; the brand was the trap.

Building the entire brand on one fixed price — a brilliant anchor in stable times, a noose when the world inflates.
